Weak necessity modals as homogeneous pluralities of worlds

چکیده
We claim that weak necessity modals like English "should" are referential expressions denote pluralities of worlds, against the standard analysis, according to which all modal auxiliaries quantifiers. Weak pattern plural definites when tested for homogeneity effects (Löbner 2000, Križ 2016): they have scopeless readings under negation, tolerate exceptions in certain discourse contexts, and exhibit other properties characteristic homogeneous definite plurals. also discuss how extend this analysis French Javanese, built compositionally from strong by adding subjunctive morphology.

Update Semantics for Weak Necessity Modals
Thispaper develops anupdate semantics forweaknecessitymodals (‘ought’, ‘should’). The central idea, defended in greater detail elsewhere (Silk 2012b), is that weak necessity modals suspend the assumption that the necessity of the modal’s prejacent is verified in the evaluation world. Weak necessity modals afford a means of entertaining and planning for hypothetical extensions of the current con...
متن کاملEvidence Sensitivity in Weak Necessity Deontic Modals
Kolodny and MacFarlane () have made a pioneering contribution to our understanding of how the interpretation of deontic modals can be sensitive to evidence and information. But integrating the discussion of informationsensitivity into the standard Kratzerian framework for modals suggests ways of capturing the relevant data without treating deontic modals as “informational modals” in their s...
متن کاملWorlds of Homogeneous Artifacts
We present a formal first-order theory of artificial objects, i.e., objects made out of a finite number of parts and subject to assembling and dismantling processes. These processes are absolutely reversible. The theory is an extension of the theory of finite sets with urelements. The notions of transformation and identity are defined and studied on the assumption that the objects are homogeneo...
متن کاملJapanese Evidentials as Modals
This talk reports on a joint project with Norry Ogata on the semantics of Japanese evidentials. Until recently, evidential expressions have not received much attention in the (formal) semantic literature. This situation has changed in the last few years; influential work by Izvorski (1997) and Faller (2002), for instance, has inspired a good deal of work. The consensus at this point seems to be...

(2) Socrates is a man are semantic, and not merely syntactic, constituents of (1); someone who does not understand that name or that predicate does not understand (1). In this respect (1) differs from the metalinguistic “Socrates is a man” is a necessary truth in English. (b) Intuitively, also, (1) results from the application of a sentential operator “necessarily” to (2) at least somewhat as S...
